About me: I've been watching the alliance tournament for years, and it is one of my favorite things in EVE. Last year I gave it a shot and was the FC and captain for the Razor team (we lost to Hydra Reloaded in the semifinals).
Last year's AT format was not very good (sorry). Due to the growing interest in the AT, many teams applied and many teams never got a chance to qualify. Beyond that, the 2-round Swiss system made it harder for teams to advance if they performed well in their first round (you would get an easier second round opponent if you eeked out win rather than stomped the other team, an absolutely ludicrious mechanic). The Swiss system does not work when there are only two rounds. In addition to that, the metagaming in the group stages was ridiculous and non-competitive. Our team was forced to metagame or be-metagamed, and nobody on the team liked doing it. Only the final knockout stage was fair and competitive except the last match, but meh, that is nearly unavoidable.
The solution? It needs to be inclusive, fair, and resistant to metagaming. This, of course, depends on the resources and time available from CCP. A double-elimination tournament would be very good, but there is no way CCP has enough time to devote to it. The next best choice may be a 2-stage tournament, where teams are ranked in the first stage and the second stage is single elimination, probably using the top 32 teams.
The first stage needs to have three fights to properly rank teams. The first round of the first stage is randomized. Following that, teams are ordered first by wins and then then by points, and each subsequent round (assuming 120 teams) pairs 1vs120, 2vs119, 3vs118, etc. For those of you that are good with math, that's a lot of fights. Assuming 120 teams, that would be 180 fights just to rank the top 32 teams. If CCP is serious about having a good tournament, they will find a way to do this quickly and efficiently. To help reduce the initial number of teams, maybe CCP can increase the entrance fee, and increase the time characters are required to be in their corps/alliances in order to participate. CCP could also enforce a minimum corp age, something like "only players that are in corps that are older than 6 months can participate."
The second stage is a simple single-elimination tournament with the top 32 teams. This is broadcasted as usual.
TL:DR I suggest a two-stage tournament. The first stage should have three rounds, pairing the top and bottom ranked teams after round one. The second stage is a single elimination knock-out tournament with 32 teams, again pairing the top and bottom ranked teams. |

Shameless bump, in case CCP is thinking about the format for the next tourney. |
